My interest in science writing is a consequence of having a father with a degree in geology and so much scientific curiosity that he built an interferometer in our basement to replicate the famous Michaelson-Morley-Miller experiments measuring the speed of light.
I have written for Miller-McCune Magazine, High Country News, Science Magazine, Environmental Health Perspectives, Environmental Science & Technology, Forest Magazine, and many other publications.
Science writing wasn’t where I started. I spent much of my young adulthood as a musician in Portland, Oregon. After 12 years I burned out on playing in clubs and went back to college, finishing up with a master’s degree in journalism.
Then I started freelancing. I wrote for Eugene Weekly, Willamette Week, Oregon Food Journal, and PSU Magazine, covering a variety of subjects including AAA baseball in Eugene, how grocery stores arrange their departments, and the politics of Christian symbols on public property.
I began specializing in science writing when the two Willamette Valley weeklies asked me to write previews for a series of science and public policy lectures they co-sponsored.
Since then I’ve focused mostly on the environment, environmental health, and climate, including issues such as carbon sequestration, epigenetics and prenatal chemical exposures, chemical regulation, forest management, nuclear waste storage, and the environmental effects of war.
